(I totally understand the loss and hardships people are going through these days. And i pray for all of ours well being.)
Disaster like, Covid19 or Amphan Cyclone is trying to teach us, that we are just insignificant and probably nothing in the face of this giant universe.
So like all other living beings, we should also learn to live in cooperation & harmony with the nature, and not to become parasites who are just sucking out resources from earth. We may have big big plans for the future, but just one mighty swipe, and all our plans turns into oblivion. The saying “Man proposes, but it is God who disposes” aptly fits here.
But even in such trying situation, scriptures teaches us a lot. Though such teachings may not actually relieve us of our material catastrophe, and we surely have to depend upon modern scientific means, but it surely gives us strength to face it.
Oppenheimer, the father of Nuclear bomb quotes out Bhagvat Gita, after the very first Nuclear Bomb was exploded:
B.G 11.32
– Time I am, the great destroyer of the worlds, and I have come here to destroy all people. With the exception of you [the Pāṇḍavas], all the soldiers here on both sides will be slain.
Lord says that He is the great destroyer (कालोऽस्मि) of worlds.
It’s like, the sharp teeth of tiger are very lethal for its enemy, but same teeth are protection for its cub. It doesn’t even pinch the cub when the tiger holds them in its teeth.
So, even with little faith that there is a Creator or Supreme Being/Force above us, orchestrating the universe through it’s agent like Mother Nature, or even if someone believes in animism, i.e. superiority of Nature, this verse can help lighten the mood in such situations by teaching the virtue of Humility or being Humble. That we are tiny in front of mighty nature, and should learn to live in harmony with it.
